A tale of chicken soup.

I am the first to admit that cooking meat is my culinary weak spot.  Touching raw meat grosses me out.  The idea that it could leave all sorts of nasty germs all over my kitchen freaks me out further.  Really, I could go on & on about my beef with cooking meat, but I’ll spare you. Continue reading

Clap along.

Picture 286Nothing tickles me more than finding the things she leaves for us like the above note written in the corner of the kitchen blackboard.  Tucked under the ongoing grocery list, I found that little nugget of happy the other day.

Other nuggets of happy this week? Continue reading

The internet effect.

The other morning, I walked into the downstairs bathroom that is pretty much the domain of Edie.  There I noticed peeking behind the shower curtain, a Hello Kitty bath toy perched on the spout of the tub.  I wanted to capture it in a still life – my first thought was I admit, to post it on instagram, like the purple duckie shot from a few weeks ago.  Only unlike the purple duckie on top of the soap dish, any shot I attempted to get of Hello Kitty seemed to  spotlight the funk of the tub. That escalated quickly.

Not being in elementary school doesn’t mean an end to the Valentine’s Day exchange. Instead of hand crafting a Valentine for every classmate, a plan was hatched with her lunch table to exchange treats in honor of the day.  She had her heart set on sharing cupcakes, which I willingly agreed to help with while tuning out the part about a DIY cupcake holder idea she’d gotten from Pinterest in which to present them. World Community Arts Day, 2014

Distance doesn’t have to be an obstacle in approaching World Community Arts Day. Thanks to modern technology, we can interact with people all over the world without leaving the comforts of our home. As the discussion of what & how to approach a project took place via Facebook posts, USPS delivery of handwritten notes, recipes & art projects to each others’ doorsteps, it occurred to me that this was our community project.  Despite the distance from Virginia to California, my friend G & I were making concrete connections as well as virtual ones without having to leave our homes. It’s fun to fondue!

Picture 119It’s no secret that the people who inhabit our neighborhood use any sort of excuse to host a get-together. As the snow continued to accumulate Thursday, Dahlia sent out an email asking if anyone else thought this was cheese fondue weather. Our thoughts may have been more along the lines of, good gosh let’s get out of this house and drink with other people, but hey, fondue worked.  A few emails (and phone calls) later, we appeared to have a plan. Back.

Thank you all for your kind words on the loss of my cousin Henry.  Last week was brutal, just plain and simple.

We are slowly getting back into the swing of things here.  It’s amazing the restorative power of a pot of vegetable soup, freshly baked bread & homemade chocolate pudding can have. Did I mention the pudding was dark chocolate?  If I was a better food blogger, I’d have written this post around recipes for at least one of those home cooked items, with beautiful images.  But I’m not.  And to be honest, the pudding was not entirely smooth.  The phone rang AND there was a knock at the door as I came to a critical point in pudding making.  Oh well.  It was still pretty darn edible, even if it wasn’t perfect.  Such is life.  Not always perfect, but still pretty darn tasty if you can get past the lumps.

So much to say….

I realize it’s been quiet in this space so I thought I’d pop in and say hello.  There’s so much to talk about, I’m not entirely sure where to begin, but due to major technical difficulties, you’re only getting the highlights right now.  First there was a small bout with the flu followed by the stomach bug that managed to keep me barely functioning for over a week. There was a good streak of dinner fail going on here, including my managing to reduce a quart of soup from the freezer to a half cup of burnt mush even the chickens wouldn’t eat.  I followed that up with burnt popcorn, but the third time proved the charm thankfully.  Edie may have actually patted me on the head as I finally presented an edible dinner, assuring me we all make mistakes.  Birthday weekend began just as I was able to think straight again, although the words of my favorite Jewish mother rang in my ears, who told me to GO SLOW, to not pronounce myself better the first second I stopped feeling like shit.  I was ever so grateful for a few easy buttons, first in the form of a new cupcake recipe that was as easy as my favorite brownie recipe  from Millie (Thank you!) and then in the form of a peach pie I’d popped in the freezer last August for Pat’s birthday that I pulled out and popped in the oven. Sitting here eating warm peach pie that tasted of summer while the snow fell outside made much right with the world.  I am more than ridiculously excited about some of the new cookbooks I picked up at the swap Cville Swaps & the Charlottesville Cooking School hosted, including a vegan one.  Not that I’m going vegan, but I am always looking for new ideas that don’t involve meat or dairy because quite honestly neither one of those always sit well with me. For a few years now I have aimed to have at least one vegan dinner a week, probably mostly to balance out my butter habit, which I’ve made great strides in reducing this fall.  But because my ancient computer has developed some serious issues which may or not be fatal and I’m currently typing this on Pat’s laptop, which I borrowed so that I can work on things like my current GREAT IDEA, you are just going to have to wait until things settle down around here to hear more about all those things.  Fingers crossed it will be sooner rather than later.

Fun Friday Links.

Happy Weekend Everyone.

Easing back into it…

The holidays are officially over, the big yellow angel has returned despite the frigid temps, the halls have been undecked (with the exception of a few strings of lights left here & there about the house I’ve decided need to stay out in the name of staying cozy & bright) and so-called real life, the one with schedules, responsibilities and 6:30 am wake-ups has returned.
