Preztels with Mollie

This past weekend found us packing up & heading over to see the Smiley’s this weekend, where we frolicked in their back yard all day Sunday.

Mollie whipped up a batch of soft pretzels that were omigodsogood.  And she made it look so easy.

Picture 279The recipe is from the King Arthur website – Hot Buttered Soft Pretzels.  Start to finish, they take just over an hour.  They really cannot be easier.

Picture 280The one variation Mollie made from the original recipe was to make the dough balls into smaller pieces, each one weighing 1.5 ounces instead of the called for 2.5 ounces.  They turned out beautifully delicious.  So delicious that Monday when I asked everyone what they wanted for dinner, they replied “Preztels”.

Me being me, I decided to try some spelt flour in the recipe.  I did not add enough water and I’m pretty sure I did not knead the dough enough.  This is not a recipe that forgives those sorts of things the way bread dough does.  Lesson learned.

I was able to roll them out, although the end result did not look as pretty as Mollie’s.

Picture 282They sort of looked like dog pooh to be honest.

However, covered in salt, baked & brushed with melted butter, they tasted divine.  So go, make them as listed on the website with all purpose flour.  Have them for dinner – maybe with some nice brats?  Definitely with mustard. They really are so easy & so yummy, it doesn’t matter if they look like dog pooh.

These sound awesome! I’m going to try them. How did Molly lift them from the water bath to the baking sheet –just with fingers, or scooped with a spatula?

With her fingers I think. They are small enough it’s not a problem. Also, she’s really good at rolling them.

I have been thinking of making pretzels for a couple of weeks. I’m going to compare your recipe with the one I have and see which sounds easier…would be funny if they are the same.
